Cayman’s Best…
Indian food
Indian cuisine is a go-to comfort food for many of us around the world. I’m particularly drawn to the bold flavours of Indian curries, spiced biryanis and airy naan bread that it’s known for. With only a handful of restaurants in Cayman it’s vital that you know which ones serve #CaymansBest Indian food.
Located on the premises of Health City is Blue Rock, the sister restaurant of Chef Vidyadhara Shetty’s Blue Cilantro on the Seven Mile strip. This restaurant and lounge consists of indoor and outdoor seating, a central bar area, two pool tables and TVs for sports fans. The menu is quite eclectic and tasty, but they do feature a handful of Indian food that is worth the drive, such as their flavourful chicken tikka masala and the samosas with an addictive mint chutney and tamarind sauce.
Curry in a Hurry is Chef Remy’s vibrant Indian street food truck and bar located on the George Town waterfront. Known for bold spices and comforting classics, the casual spot serves up authentic Indian flavours inspired by Chef Remy’s Goan heritage in a casual, open-air setting. Feel free to stop by for a quick lunch, sunset bites on the harbourfront, or grab-and-go meal. Guests can expect freshly prepared curries, rotating daily specials, and a laid-back environment. I recommend ordering their flavourful Samosas that are served with tamarind chutney and a herbaceous mint sauce, a burst of flavour with their Pani Puri or go heavier with a loaded Biryani or their rich Chicken Tikka Masala.
Indian BBQ Junction
For some of the island's most flavour-packed Indian food without the fancy setting head to Indian BBQ Junction on Crewe Road. Tucked away behind Flavour's restaurant, this casual spot specialises in hearty Indian classics and street-food-that are packed with flavour. The menu is relatively small, but what they do, they do incredibly well. Their butter chicken is rich and velvety, while the bone-in tandoori chicken is packed with smoky, spiced flavour. You'll also find Indian dishes that are less familiar, such as the Kathi Roll and a variety of proteins to choose from; lobster, paneer cheese, lamb and chicken. It's a particularly good option if you're looking for authentic Indian flavours, generous portions and reasonable prices in a casual setting.
Sea Harvest at Sunset House
One of the most consistent and authentic places to grab an Indian curry happens to come from the casual dive resort Sunset House. Even though they have flavourful biryanis, their menu is very much focused on Indian curries. You'll feel full after dining there as all of the curries are served with papadums, basmati rice and Indian salad (a citrusy blend of cucumbers, tomatoes & red onions). If you think you can handle more then order their regular or garlic naan to dip into your curry sauce, raita or mango chutney. You can order their Indian menu for lunch or dinner and have the choice to dine indoors at the Sea Harvest Restaurant or seaside on the deck at My Bar. I know that the casual vibe of My Bar may seem like an odd place to order Indian food, but that’s my favourite way to enjoy it.
Southern Spice
If you are looking for an extensive Indian menu then you want to head to Southern Spice. Their appetisers consist of smooth hummus and spicy samosas, whilst their mains focus on tasty biryanis and an array of meat, seafood and vegetarian curries served with basmati or saffron rice. They also have homemade Indian breads in the form of naan, roti and paratha which are a great addition to your meal. Southern Spice offers indoor seating making it a popular place for residents to dine-in for lunch or dinner, but if you would rather eat at home then you can order take-out or get delivery through companies like Bento. My go-to meal is the chana (chickpea) masala, saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, saffron rice and garlic naan.
