Cayman's Best... Breakfasts

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I don’t tend to dine out often for this morning meal. Whenever those breakfast cravings strike, you can find me at one of these locations. Check them out if you are looking to start your day off on the right foot.

Bayside

Bayside by Chef Joe Hughes has been a welcome addition to the West Bay community since it opened in early 2022. For such a small space it’s incredible to see how many dishes they are able to push out of the kitchen. They have an elevated and creative approach to food and provide detailed information on each dish for those of us with dietary restrictions (vegan or vegetarian) or food allergies to nuts, gluten, shellfish or dairy. Order their instagrammable and delicious Lemon Ricotta Pancakes topped with pistachio and rose or choose one of their globally-inspired toppings for the Avocado On Sourdough Toast. They’re open from 8am on Tuesday to Sunday so pop in for a sit down breakfast and coffee.

Brussels Sprouts

Brussels Sprouts by Chef Anthony focuses on creating delicious and healthy meals, with options that target those who are on a Keto diet or participating in the Whole Life Challenge. During the week they offer a few breakfast items, but it’s really on Saturdays that you’ll get the full experience. With savoury, sweet, healthy and indulgent meals on offer, there’s something to please everyone. Try their cheesy Breakfast Sandwich that is best enjoyed with a knife and fork, their melt-in-your-mouth Mixed Berries Brioche French Toast or their sweet & savoury Pancake Breakfast Tacos. Swing by on Saturday mornings from 7am to get your breakfast fill before completing your errands for the day.

Cayman Cabana

Cayman Cabana is known for their weekend breakfast known as the ‘Locavore Experience’. This seaside restaurant provides shaded tables on the lower deck where diners can feel a sense of calm as they listen to the waves and watch fish swim around coral heads just a few feet away.  I recommend starting your meal with a glass of local coconut water or the 'bellini of the day',  which utilises locally sourced juices like sweet mango. When it comes to the food you won't be disappointed as they utilise local ingredients in the creation of their Avo Toastie, traditional English breakfast, Coconut Bacon French Toast and even a creative twist on benedicts like adding oxtail, conch or lobster.  Cayman Cabana continues to push the boundaries of what Caribbean food can be with their weekly farm-to-table dinners and now breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-3pm.

Eats Café

This popular American diner has been around for over 20 years!  Eats fits a classic diner to a tee with red booths, bar stools facing a kitchen window and drip coffee and Lipton tea. Their extensive breakfast menu sticks to the classics and includes french toast, omelettes, skillets and breakfast combos, which will feed everyone in your group.  On the weekends it gets particularly busy when dining in, so some residents opt to call ahead for a to-go order.  The kitchen is extremely efficient so food comes out quickly, but know that there may be a wait for a table.  You can swing by daily from 6:30am, with select breakfast items being served all day.

Fidel Murphy’s

A traditional Irish pub, that has become a 20+ year institution in Cayman, is the jovial and lively Fidel Murphy's.  With one of the best pub atmospheres on island they are the place to go when ordering a pint of Guinness, cheering on your favourite sports team and grabbing a bite to eat anytime of day.  Being one of the only places serving an all-day breakfast you can expect traditional fare and some with a twist.  The savory dishes are egg-centric and consist of the ‘2 Eggs As You Like’, Fidel’s Big Breakfast and the Mac Biscuit, but there are a few sweet options. There's an array of breakfast sides you can add-on including grilled tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms and black pudding. Visit them daily from 8am on the weekends and from 10am weekdays until the kitchen closes at 10pm. Sports fans should note that when UK-based sports are playing they may open their doors as early as 6am.

ICOA

This eclectic restaurant is featured in our Seven Mile Beach District Guides, but they definitely make the cut for being one of my favourite breakfast spots.  Most of their menu focuses on American classics like omelettes, French toast, oatmeal and breakfast sandwiches (including a mouthwatering BLT).  You may even find a few dishes with a twist including the Avocado Toast with togorashi sprinkled avocado, crab salad and a poached egg topped with hollandaise.  They even offer freshly baked goods if you need a quick muffin or pastry to enjoy throughout the day. You can visit them for breakfast Monday-Saturday from 7am-11:30am.

South West Collective

This cozy café located on the second floor of Harbour Place in downtown George Town allows guests to enjoy stunning views of the harbour. Being the sister restaurant to Jessie’s Juice Bar & Café they offer similar freshly makes coffees, juices and smoothies that people have come to love, in addition to hearty breakfast items including omelettes, granola and toasts all week long. When you visit on the weekends you’ll get to enjoy an expansion of their breakfast menu that includes all day items, classic and creative brunch specials and a selection of Mexican-inspired dishes from their Cantina menu. Swing by Monday to Friday from 7am and on weekends from 8:30am to take advantage of their breakfast items.

The Diner - Temporarily Closed As Moving Locations

The Diner is a locally owned and operated establishment by husband and wife duo, Chef Dane White and Anita Parsons-White. This cozy café opened in 2021 near the West Bay 4-way stop and is best known for serving Caymanian dishes for lunch and dinner, but I’m here to tell you that they also have a delicious All Day breakfast menu too.  The menu is small, but it incorporates local ingredients and has enough to satisfy both sweet and savoury customers.  Go sweet with their custardy French Toast made with local coconut bread, or go savoury and order a dish with local eggs such as the Omelette, Brisket Hash or the “Two Eggs Any Style”.  For such a small business their coffee programme is impressive as they utilise quality Lavazza products and even offer organic and alternative milk options too.  This is a great spot to visit if you want to #supportlocal and have a relaxed experience, all while enjoying a delicious meal.
